An Olympic Volunteer

SSU student Mariia Ruban is helping to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.

Mariia has been skiing professionally since childhood and she is also fond of learning foreign languages. So, these two key components allowed the student to successfully qualify for this international event and, as part of a large team from the Russian Federation, support and assist the hosts of the Olympic Games on the slopes of the National Alpine Ski Center located in the Yangqin area, China.

For me, the Olympic Games are a unique opportunity to show all my knowledge, skills and abilities for the successful organization of a common cause. Only here, at the Olympic start, in a short time you can meet and communicate with representatives from all over the world and practice your knowledge of English and Japanese, as well as help foreign guests in a variety of issues. Finally, promptly learn professional vocabulary in English for the implementation of effective communication. Although my academic major is Japanese, my knowledge of hieroglyphics from our classes at the university is very useful to me in Beijing, as there are often similar hieroglyphs on signs and announcements, the main meaning of which is already familiar to me,” says Mariia.

The student also noted that the scale of the preparation and organization of the Games is simply amazing. Every day a huge international team works for the benefit of a successful event.
