A cultural bridge between Russia and China

On May 29, the department of Russian language and literature and International relations department of Sakhalin State University (Russia) completed a series of thematic online-meetings with students from Harbin Normal University (China). The results of three two-hour classes in May were presentation of concise material on history and culture of Sakhalin region and the city of Harbin.

Graduate students of the department shared with their peers from the Chinese university what they usually eat, how they live, what they read and listen to, where the residents of Sakhalin island prefer to travel etc. For some graduates students this form of communication was new, but interesting. For others it gave the opportunity to test practical fragments of graduation qualification works on the «Russian as a foreign language» field of study.

Students of Harbin Normal University told about the geographical location, science and education, politics and economic system of their city. They presented their favorite places in Harbin, such as the Snow and Ice Art Museum, the Harbin-Niigata Friendship Park, the Deer Park and Squirrel Island, the Polar Region Amusement Park, the Dragon Tower and the Siberian Tiger Park.

Third-year undergraduate students Svetlana Zimnitskaya and Victoria Inozemtseva also joined the online-meetings. They wrote and performed two original songs, one of which can become an informal anthem that unites Sakhalin island and Harbin.

And here is how the curator of the project, an associate professor of the Institute of Slavic Languages of Harbin Normal University Ms. Yu Lingling (于玲玲) evaluates the meetings:

«Many thanks to the department for organizing such a useful event, which is necessary for the exchange of knowledge and strengthening of our friendship. The presentation made by Russian students have expanded our understanding of the Far East of Russia, awakened our thirst for literature and culture of Russia. Sakhalin Island is a wonderful place where you can feel the traces of Pushkin and Chekhov, fragment of the culture of indigenous peoples <…> you have discovered the literary, cultural, historical and ecological aspects of Sakhalin for us…».

In the next academic year Sakhalin State University is planning to continue this kind of international cooperation, and we will acquire a new format to attract new participants from foreign countries.
